Creating Platforms for Community Voices

Turning first-person video and podcast storytelling into long-term brand assets.

Lifting up First-Person Perspectives

Over the past five years, Ascent Strategic Communications has represented organizations that exist to serve a constituency: rare disease patients and their families, advocacy coalitions, biotech companies developing treatments for underserved conditions, and nonprofits championing a cause. These clients come to us with different goals, but they share a common communications imperative. Their work is only as strong as the trust they build with the very people they serve, and that trust depends on lifting up those voices rather than speaking over them. Advocacy communications, done well, puts the constituency front and center: their stories, their language, their lived experience, told on their own terms.

Ascent builds strategies rooted in clarity, authenticity, and confidence, helping brands rise above the noise and hold up over time.  Our video work reflects that same philosophy. Rather than one-off assets, our first-person videos and podcast episodes are designed to be  reused and repurposed across content strategies and future campaigns.

Providing a Platform for Community Voices

Ascent regularly sources and manages video collection and  podcast recording tools that have become central to how we capture testimonials and first-person perspectives from the constituencies our clients represent and serve. These tools let clients invite the patients, families, customers, members and networks they serve to submit stories directly, in their own words. Our team then edits and integrates the footage across integrated marketing campaigns, building brand awareness, community engagement, and trust with the very audiences our clients exist to serve.

Our first-person video work spans:

  • Advocacy and community engagement — community members record their own stories and submit them directly to our team for editing, keeping the constituency’s voice, not a brand’s script, at the center of the narrative. See how this supports our rare disease advocacy clients.

  • Podcast development — we equip clients to record their own podcast episodes while providing production support and handling the finished asset, giving constituents a platform and a microphone rather than a talking point. See how OMSA launched Maritime in America.

  • Multichannel marketing placement — once self-produced videos are recorded, our team edits and distributes them across an organization’s owned media channels, websites, and, where appropriate, paid or earned placements. See how this client reached their community.

the results

  • 60+ testimonial videos and sound bites collected
  • 40+ videos edited and incorporated into brand assets
  • 73+ podcast episodes produced and published

These numbers point to something bigger than output. For organizations built to serve, every testimonial and episode  is proof that the people they represent have a voice in how that story gets told. Each asset is also a long-term communications resource, ready to be repurposed across future campaigns rather than shelved after a single use. That reusability is what turns one recorded story into sustained community engagement, and it’s why first-person video and audio have become some of the most durable tools in our clients’ communications strategies.

By giving communities a direct platform to speak for themselves, our clients build the kind of trust that scripted messaging can’t manufacture: real people, telling real stories, in their own words.
